Travelling electrically with a campervan: logical, comfortable and future-proof.

You want to get out there. Feel free, enjoy the silence around you, not be limited. But what about electric driving? Is that really only suitable for ‘a trip around the Netherlands’? Or can you also travel adventurously through Europe or even beyond with an electric campervan? The short answer: yes, of course you can. And the long one? You can read it below. Because electric travel is not only possible – it’s quieter, more relaxing, and ready for the future.

Why travelling electrically makes sense

Technology does not stand still. Electric driving has now become a mature alternative to traditional campervans. Maintenance is cheaper, you drive more quietly and without vibrations. Thanks to regenerative braking, smart software, an efficient electric motor, and ever-improving batteries, range and charging speed are now more than comfortable. With a full battery and normal weather conditions, you can drive over 400 km. Very low temperatures can have some influence on the range, but the battery is equippe

“We are thoroughly enjoying our ID.Buzz campervan that we bought at Outbase Campervans. By now we have traveled almost 10,000 km through France and Spain. We experienced all kinds of weather, from -6 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius, and it was always comfortable in the bus.”

Even on a longer journey, 300 km between charging stops is very achievable. In practice, that means: every 3 to 4 hours a short break of about half an hour. Ideal for a bathroom break, a cup of coffee, lunch – or simply to relax for a while. And unlike with an electric car, you’re not just waiting in the driver’s seat: you make use of your camper. That way, waiting no longer feels like waiting.

Add to that the rapidly growing European charging network — with plenty of fast chargers along all major routes — and you realize: travelling electrically just makes sense.

At your destination, the daily kilometers often go down, making you much less dependent on charging stations. In practice, you charge once every few days – sometimes a bit longer, sometimes very quickly. Where you used to have to go to a gas station, now you charge in places where you’re already stopping anyway: while doing groceries at the supermarket, exploring a city, or going out for dinner. Many people think beforehand that they’ll be dependent on charging at campsites, but in reality that’s more the exception than the rule. In places with good charging infrastructure, charging on the road is the standard. Still, a campsite with a charging point is convenient in more adventurous regions such as Eastern Europe or North Africa — and yes, most of the time that’s perfectly possible.

What if I run out of power? Or if there’s a power outage?

The idea of running out of power feels uncomfortable, but in practice the chance is very small. The ID.Buzz warns you well in advance that it’s time to charge – first subtly, then more insistently. From a customer’s experience we even know: at “0 km remaining” he was still able to drive about 10 km. So you have plenty of time to find a charging point, even if you unexpectedly end up at a broken charger.

On top of that, with an electric camper you have the advantage that any location with a 230v connection is a potential charging spot. So if you find yourself in a remote area without charging stations, in the worst case you can simply knock on the door of a farm or a house. Not ideal, but probably one of the most memorable moments of your trip. Because: electricity is almost everywhere — diesel often isn’t.

And what if there’s a major power outage? Then indeed you can’t charge… but the same goes for fuel stations, whose pumps also stop working. The nice thing is: if you still have enough range left, you can even give something back. During the big power outage in Spain (spring 2025), an Outbase ID.Buzz was used by a customer as a coffee bar for about 30 travelers at a roadside restaurant. Self-sufficient and hospitable. How great is that?!
