Camping with 2 babies and a dog; Thomas and Michelle on their Landrover-green Outbase ID.Buzz

With one-year-old twins and their dog Maggie, camping as a family might seem like quite the challenge. Yet that's exactly what Thomas and Michelle love to do. Since October 2025, they’ve had their Outbase ID.Buzz and have already taken four to five trips with the whole family.

From tent to campervan

Before their children (Castor and Selena) were born, Thomas and Michelle used to travel with a tent. Spending lots of time outdoors on simple campsites was important to them. After that, they would occasionally rent a small campervan. They did not choose a large motorhome, because they had seen with others that the bigger the vehicle, the quicker you end up sitting inside.

Those rented campervans were well liked, and after the twins arrived, they were ready for the next step: a campervan of their own. Not a large one, but a compact, practical campervan.

"A small campervan gives us the feeling that we are still spending as much time outdoors as possible.’’

Why electric?

Michelle has a soft spot for classic VW vans, but they don’t align with their sustainability values. She was clear from the start: if they were going to buy a campervan, it had to be fully electric. The ID.Buzz is the modern take on those classic VW-vans, which made it an easy choice for them. At Outbase, they found exactly what they were looking for.

The range, the bed system, the clever storage compartments, the sustainable materials and the abundance of natural light inside the campervan made the difference. The Outbase ID.Buzz was the one. They immediately agreed on the colour too: it had to be Land Rover green, because it doesn’t show dirt as easily!

Michelle: “For us, it’s almost a sport to take as little as possible and adapt to the space you have.”

Will it all fit?

Between ordering and receiving the campervan, they felt a bit uncertain. Wouldn’t it be too small with two children and a dog? But when they started packing, they quickly noticed that everything fit. Even the double bike trailer fit in the back, and that narrow drawer turned out to be perfect for the toys. They have only one compartment for their own clothes, but thanks to the smart layout, everything stays neatly stored. No loose bags with baby items, which is really nice.

Sleeping all together

The children sleep in pop-up tents on the lower bed, which works well. For now, Thomas and Michelle sleep upstairs: “Very cosy, warm and comfortable,” says Michelle with a laugh. When the children are older, they’ll move upstairs. Dog Maggie has found her favourite spots too: between the children or on one of the front seats.

Tested in the cold

So far, their trips have mostly been short getaways, often to nature campsites. On one occasion, temperatures dropped to -5°C overnight. “Condensation on the tent fabric froze, but thanks to the app-controlled heating, it stayed comfortable inside. That’s important with small children, otherwise they don't sleep well,” Michelle says.

“If it works this well in cold weather, it’s only going to get better.’’

Getting used to it

Are there really no downsides? Well, rotating the front seats can still be a bit tricky, they say. And the lack of a second Isofix point was solved with a longer seatbelt, which allowed two child seats to be installed safely after all. At first, it took some getting used to using the campervan. For example, when the children were napping on the bed during the day, Thomas and Michelle could no longer access certain items. By thinking ahead and developing a routine, they gradually discovered what worked best for them.

A bright future ahead

Michelle now prefers driving the ID.Buzz over their other electric car. She loves the elevated view of the road and finds it wonderfully smooth to drive. They’re also really looking forward to the season they primarily bought it for: spring. This year, Switzerland is on the itinerary.

‘’Standing on top of a mountain pass, finding small campsites, letting the children roam free and explore, that just sounds amazing to us.

We can’t wait to really get out there this season, the four of us - and Maggie.’’
