At the moment, we build our campervans exclusively on the Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo, the commercial vehicle version.
By using the ID.Buzz Cargo as a base, you can make the most of the available space in the ID.Buzz. This allows us to use the space in the chassis under the floor, enabling us to create four exceptionally spacious floor compartments, while our battery system is also partly built into the hollow space of the sidewalls. To create the most complete camper possible, this is therefore always the best base to get the maximum out of it.

However, soon (March/April 2026) we will also introduce a new camper version based on the Volkswagen ID.Buzz People. This version will be released alongside the current version.

The camper version based on the People will have a simpler setup, featuring only our well-known sleeping bench system combined with the swivel seats. Optionally supplemented with the swivel kitchen, the (sleeping) pop-top roof and a few small extras. Fewer options, less luxury, less insulation, fewer cabinets and no floor compartments like in the Delta, but still fully functional as a camper. And therefore much more practical than camper boxes, while the price is comparable, with a better residual value. After all, converting from bench to bed in just 10 seconds while staying inside, and always having a usable trunk for all your gear.

The Outbase ID.Buzz is designed with maximum efficiency in mind. Every millimetre is used. Many people are genuinely surprised during their first encounter that this campervan is built on the standard wheelbase. The sense of space is remarkably generous, unlike anything else in this segment and comparable to much larger campervans.

It’s no coincidence that many campers switch from a larger Volkswagen California. They’re often amazed to find they can still bring the same amount of gear, while everything simply works in a smarter, easier and more enjoyable way.

Beyond efficient use of space, quality plays a key role. You can see it and feel it straight away. The interior is carefully built by our own specialists in Utrecht. For components produced by partners, we deliberately work with local companies known for their craftsmanship and reliability.

Our starting point is always the same: a campervan built as sustainably as possible, using high-quality materials and a smart, spacious and practical design.

At the moment, we only build on the regular Volkswagen ID.Buzz. Often referred to colloquially as the short version, although Volkswagen itself calls it the normal length version :)

This choice is based on the fact that so far we have only built campervans based on the ID.Buzz Cargo, and the Cargo version is only available in the normal length.

With the arrival of the new Outbase camper version based on the ID.Buzz People, this does open the door to building on the long version as well. However, adapting our pop-top roof for the long version is quite costly, so to finance this development there would also need to be a long-wheelbase version of the ID.Buzz Cargo available on the market. And there is good news; all signals are green that Volkswagen will introduce an ID.Buzz Cargo LWB sometime in 2026. As soon as this is officially confirmed, we will start the development of the pop-top roof.

This version will be offered alongside the current standard length, because we continue to believe that the shorter version offers the ideal mix of space, efficiency and maneuverability. The full camper that we already build on the Cargo actually offers more storage space than the long version based on the People, due to the maximum use of space.

The table below shows the key specifications of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. For comparison, we’ve included other electric vans.

At present, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz doesn’t meet the tax requirements for campervans in the Netherlands. This means you will pay road tax based on a passenger vehicle and will not yet receive the reduced campervan rate. From 2027, these Dutch tax rules will change and the ID.Buzz will qualify for the discounted campervan rate. Example: Dutch road tax for an Outbase ID.Buzz (2,650 kg) compared with a diesel Volkswagen Transporter camper (2,400 kg) and the new hybrid Multivan California(2,450 kg) in the Utrecht province:

From 2025, BPM will also apply to electric cars and/or campervans in The Netherlands. In 2025 and 2026, this is set at €667.00 – a one-off payment at vehicle registration. This amount is already included in our price list.

Fully equipped, the Outbase ID.Buzz (updated model with larger battery) weighs just 2,650 kg. The maximum permitted weight is 3,150 kg, leaving 500 kg for passengers, luggage, and extras, such as bikes or a bike rack.

In the ID.Buzz, a great deal of attention has been paid to keeping the weight low, but many campervans have far less remaining payload. For example, a diesel Volkswagen Transporter with a full camper conversion can easily weigh around 2,400 kg, which makes it only marginally lighter. This difference is therefore minimal, especially when you consider that the ID.Buzz is built to meet much stricter safety standards.

With a category B licence, you're allowed to drive vehicles up to 3,500 kg. The limitation isn’t your licence, but the technical maximum weight approved by Volkswagen (3,150 kg).

Our pop-top roof is aerodynamically optimised using professional wind tunnel software, and our interior build is designed to be extremely lightweight. The camper conversion therefore has little effect on range.

Based on real-world experience of our first customers, we conclude that the new model (79 kWh) can comfortably drive over 400 km on a full 100% charge – with some reports of up to 500 km achievable when driving conservatively. However, when on the road, you won’t run the battery from 100% to 0%, so between charging stops you can expect a driving range of around 250–300 km. In practice, this means stopping every 3 hours for an approx. 25-minute charging break - a relaxed pace to travel!

Servicing of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz can be carried out at any Volkswagen dealer in the Netherlands or abroad. The first 5 or 7 years (depending on the model) are included in the purchase price.

Since we’re an official registered Volkswagen converter, our camper conversion is fully compliant with all factory guidelines. Key components - like the rear fuse box - remain easily accessible, so Volkswagen dealers and garages can continue to service the van without issue.

Camper-specific servicing is carried out by Outbase. We’re currently working on a special service plan to ensure you can enjoy your beautiful Outbase ID.Buzz campervan for many years to come. We expect to launch this in 2025. We also aim to expand our service network to offer nationwide and European coverage in the future.

We have deliberately chosen not to include a heat pump in our ID.Buzz conversions, despite some of the potential benefits.

In the winter, a heat pump improves range  by around 5–8% at temperatures close to freezing -  but in most cases, that extra range isn’t essential.

In the summer, a heat pump makes no difference to the range. In very humid conditions,

it can even be a disadvantage, as a heat pump struggles with high humidity  and that’s often precisely when you want to use heating while camping.

A heat pump also takes longer (and more energy) to start up and warm the interior.

Heat pumps add 15 kg to the vehicle weight, reducing your usable payload.

They also produce more noise – not ideal when heating the van at night on a quiet campsite. 

So, while there are some benefits, we believe the downsides outweigh the advantages, especially considering the additional cost.

The Outbase ID.Buzz campervan always has 4 approved seats and up to 4 sleeping berths. The 2 rear seats are forward-facing, comfortable, and easily accessible from both sliding doors. They are located in a safe zone in the vehicle, as the ID.Buzz has been extensively tested for rear-impact collisions, and there’s a crumple zone behind these seats

A unique feature is that the rock-and-roll bed is also fitted with an Isofix attachment point, allowing child seats to be secured in the safest and quickest way directly on the bed.

No, at Outbase, we only work with ID.Buzz vans that we source ourselves. At present, this means only new vehicles, so you’ll always be the first owner and will receive the full factory warranty on both the van and the battery.

Currently, the second-hand market does not offer a significant cost advantage over new ones. The latest model also always includes the larger upgraded battery and a more efficient engine, which increases the range by around 8%. You also get the newest software system, which is faster and more intuitive to use.

Also, very few used ID.Buzz Cargo vans meet our requirements: two front seats, two sliding doors, and a tailgate – which are essential for our camper conversion.

With the arrival of our new camper version based on the ID.Buzz People, it will soon be possible to supply your own ID.Buzz for this version.

No, we only build complete campervans. We do not sell individual parts, and we do not fit individual items, such as a pop-top roof, windows, or other components to an existing ID.Buzz.

We do get the occasional question about the Kia PV5. Although the Kia positively surprised us after we had it for two days, we still do not consider it a suitable platform for a true Outbase campervan.

We stand for sustainability, and an important part of that is producing and sourcing as much as possible locally. The fact that the Kia is produced so far away does not align with that. That is exactly what is so great about the ID.Buzz, which is built just across the border in Germany, with several Dutch suppliers involved as well.

And yes, there is a price difference, but that is also reflected in differences in range, charging speed, noise level, comfort and the health of your local economy.

No, we do not plan to release a camper based on the new Volkswagen Transporter (new T or T7). Yes, this van is more spacious than the ID.Buzz, but it is also larger in every dimension: over 500 cm long (up to 540 cm), over 200 cm wide and already more than 200 cm high without a pop-top roof. In our view, that is no longer a compact camper. If we were to go in that direction, we would rather choose a class above, such as the Renault Master E-Tech, which hardly differs in dimensions anyway ;)

But the main reason is the drivetrain. The electric Transporter does not even come close to the ID.Buzz in terms of specifications, so it is not an option. Converting a diesel is out of the question for us, and hybrid… that feels more like a compromise. With a claimed electric range of around 50 km, you will still be driving mostly on petrol. So less sustainable, lots of charging, lots of refueling, lots of maintenance and above all, a lot of hassle.

And why would you want a hybrid anyway? With the range of the ID.Buzz, you can go anywhere! We have seen customers in every corner of Europe and even the Sahara is within reach (a story about this will be coming soon on our website).

Most awards are essentially revenue models for their organisers. Many design awards often require high entry fees, don’t compare your product fairly with those of competitors, and if you win, demand additional payment to promote your win. That’s why such awards say little about the actual quality of the design, while costing a lot of money – money we’d rather invest in developing our campervans.

We’re open to genuine sustainability awards, as they can help push the industry towards greener solutions and inspire others to make positive changes. Unfortunately, these too are often used mainly as marketing tools, with vague judging processes and overreliance on public votes. We find this odd; public votes are fine for rewarding range or popularity, but not for assessing a complex subject like sustainability. That’s why we currently don’t participate in these awards either.

Instead, we value the recognition and direct feedback from our customers. We stay in touch long after delivery, and our customers’ experiences and suggestions help us keep improving our products year after year.

Because we wanted the Outbase Delta to be a fully equipped campervan, we deliberately chose the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo as its foundation.

The Cargo gives us much more freedom to design the interior as a campervan from the ground up. We're less constrained by the finished interior of the passenger version, allowing us to make the most of every available centimetre.

That means we can turn otherwise unused cavities into practical storage compartments. The difference is greater than you might expect: the Outbase Delta offers up to five times more storage space than the Flow, even though both models have the same exterior dimensions.

Starting with a blank canvas also allows us to neatly conceal all electrical wiring and position power outlets exactly where they're most useful while camping.

The same applies to insulation. Before finishing the interior, we can thoroughly insulate the entire vehicle. This creates a more comfortable living space and makes the Delta better suited to travelling in every season.

The ID. Buzz Cargo gives us the freedom to make the smartest possible use of every corner within the compact dimensions of the ID. Buzz, creating a truly fully equipped campervan.

With the Outbase Flow, we wanted to create a less extensive camper with a more accessible price, without settling for a simple camper box conversion. The ID. Buzz People turned out to be the perfect foundation.

The People already leaves the Volkswagen factory as a fully finished passenger car. The walls, floor and interior are already neatly finished, so we need to make far fewer modifications to turn it into a comfortable travel car. That means fewer materials, fewer hours of work and, ultimately, a more attractive price.

Of course, that choice also comes with compromises. Because we retain the original interior, we can't make use of every corner like we can in the Outbase Delta, which we build from an empty ID. Buzz Cargo. As a result, the Flow offers fewer built-in features and less storage space. But that's exactly what makes it a different kind of camper: simpler, lighter and equipped with everything you need for comfortable travel.

The Flow is also an interesting alternative to a removable camper box for the ID. Buzz. For a similar price, you get a solution that has been designed as a complete vehicle from the start. It offers a more comfortable bed, more practical storage and a lower overall weight, while still leaving you with a full-size luggage compartment instead of taking up all the space with a large camper box.

The result is an ID. Buzz that remains an excellent everyday passenger car, while also giving you a smart travel car that's always ready for your next adventure.

In most cases, this isn't possible. We build the Outbase Flow on new Volkswagen ID. Buzz models supplied by us. This allows us to coordinate the entire process, from configuring the vehicle and making any necessary modifications to completing the Outbase Flow conversion.

Not only does this make production more efficient, it also gives us full control over the quality of the finished camper.

We build the Outbase Delta exclusively on new Volkswagen ID.Buzz Cargo models that we order ourselves. This allows us to coordinate the entire process, from specifying the ID.Buzz to completing the Outbase Delta conversion.

The Delta is built from the ground up as a fully equipped campervan. Its interior, insulation, electrical system and all other features are therefore designed around a specific ID.Buzz Cargo configuration. Our entire production process is built around this approach.

By ordering the base vehicle ourselves, we know exactly what we're starting with and can build every Delta according to the same carefully developed process. This gives us maximum control over the quality and finish of the final product.

Already own a Volkswagen ID. Buzz? While we can't convert it into an Outbase Delta, we'd be happy to explore the possibilities for trading it in.

For us, the real question is: why wouldn't you choose a fully electric campervan?

In our view, a hybrid is a compromise. It combines two drivetrains, which also means two systems. In practice, that means more charging because of the smaller battery, refuelling with petrol as well, more technology, more maintenance, a greater chance of faults, and still producing emissions. On longer journeys, much of the electric advantage disappears, so efficiency drops while your overall travel time hardly changes.

A fully electric campervan, on the other hand, is designed from the ground up to be electric. It's quiet, smooth, comfortable and powered by a much simpler drivetrain. To us, that doesn't feel like a compromise. It feels like a better way to travel.

If you're not sure you're ready to go fully electric and are considering a hybrid campervan, our advice is simple: try both. We're convinced you'll quickly understand why we chose to go fully electric years ago.

You can also choose from 11 upholstery colours, 6 wood finishes, 2 floor colours and 2 tent fabric colours, complemented by various colours for details such as the elastic cords and curtains. This gives you countless combinations to create a Flow that perfectly suits your style.

You can also configure the ID. Buzz that forms the foundation of your Flow. To make things easy, we've created a number of standard packages. Even our entry-level package includes all the features we believe are essential. If you'd like more luxury, you can of course choose a more extensive package.

If our standard packages don't quite match your wishes, there's still plenty of flexibility. In many cases, we can configure an ID. Buzz to your exact specifications and use it as the basis for your Outbase Flow.

Finally, you decide how extensively you want to equip your camper. We've deliberately kept the Flow simpler for travellers who don't need every feature on board. If you'd like extra comfort and convenience, you can add many of the features that come as standard on the Outbase Delta.

Think of a pop-up roof with bed, electrical package, kitchen, extendable table, cool box, curtains, seat cover set and awning. That way, you only pay for the features that suit the way you travel.

You can then tailor the Delta even further to suit the way you travel. For example, you can add an upper bed in the pop-up roof, an additional storage rack, a toilet, curtains, a sliding window with insect screen, an external power connection for the electrical system, an awning, BearLock security or a seat cover set.

The Outbase Flow and Delta are both built on the electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz and share the same exterior dimensions. Yet they are two very different concepts. We describe the Flow as a travel car, while the Delta is a fully equipped campervan.

The difference starts with the vehicle itself. The Outbase Flow is built on the ID. Buzz People, the passenger version that leaves the Volkswagen factory with a fully finished interior. This makes the Flow a comfortable and versatile everyday car, which we've cleverly adapted for travelling and overnight stays. You decide how far you want to take it and can, for example, add an optional kitchen.

For a fully equipped campervan, we deliberately start with a different platform. The Outbase Delta is built on the ID. Buzz Cargo. Behind the front seats, it starts as an empty space, giving us complete freedom to design the interior from the ground up. That allows us to make use of every corner with smart storage solutions and integrated features.

The difference is greater than you'd expect from the outside. Although the Flow and Delta have the same dimensions and share the same technical platform, the Delta offers up to five times more storage space. That's exactly why we chose the Cargo as the foundation for our campervan.

The Delta also comes fully equipped for comfortable, independent travel, with an indoor and outdoor kitchen, refrigerator, generous storage, an off-grid electrical system and a well-insulated interior. It's designed for longer journeys, year-round adventures and travellers who like to have everything with them.

In short, the Flow is a fully capable travel car that's also perfect for camping. The Delta is a fully equipped campervan that makes the most of the same compact footprint.

Absolutely. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the driving comfort of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and its smart layout, the Flow is just as practical for grocery shopping, commuting or a day out as it is for a weekend away or a longer holiday.

Because the original interior of the ID. Buzz is retained, the Flow feels just like a comfortable passenger car. And whenever you're ready to head off, you already have everything on board for a spontaneous overnight stay or a longer adventure.

You don't have to choose between an everyday car and a travel car. The Outbase Flow is both.

That depends on how your Outbase Flow is configured. The Flow can be built either as a travel car or as a camper. To be officially registered as a campervan and qualify for the reduced camper tax rate, it must meet specific requirements set by the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW) and the Dutch Tax Administration. These include features such as a kitchen, sleeping accommodation, table, storage space and sufficient standing height.

If you choose a configuration that meets these requirements, the Flow can be registered as a campervan. We'd be happy to advise you on the options required and what this means for your road tax.

Yes. The Outbase Delta is officially registered as a campervan. At the moment, however, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz does not yet meet the Dutch tax requirements for the reduced camper tax rate. As a result, in 2026 you'll still pay road tax (MRB) at the passenger car rate.

Because the ID. Buzz is fully electric, you do benefit from a 30% reduction in road tax during 2026.

From 2027, the rules for campervans will change and the Outbase Delta will qualify for the reduced camper tax rate. Campervans will then pay 50% of the standard passenger car rate, with the 30% EV discount applied on top of that. In practice, this means you'll pay around 35% of the regular passenger car rate.

Below is an example of the monthly road tax for an Outbase ID. Buzz (2,650 kg) compared with a Volkswagen Transporter diesel camper (2,400 kg) and a Volkswagen Multivan California Hybrid (2,450 kg) in the province of Utrecht.

We sometimes joke that it's almost as if Volkswagen designed the ID. Buzz especially for us.

When we started Outbase, we knew we wanted to build a fully electric campervan. But we kept running into the same problem: electric vans were either too large, or the electric technology simply wasn't convincing enough. The arrival of the ID. Buzz changed everything.

For us, its dimensions are just right. It's compact enough to use comfortably every day, yet surprisingly spacious inside. From the very beginning, the electric drivetrain was impressive, and it has only improved over the years. It was exactly the combination we were looking for in a fully electric campervan.

And then there's the design. The ID. Buzz is a modern interpretation of the iconic Volkswagen T1, the vehicle that helped define the campervan as we know it today. There's also a special Dutch connection. In 1947, Ben Pon made the famous sketch that inspired Volkswagen to develop the Transporter. With so much campervan heritage in the ID. Buzz's DNA, we simply had to turn it into a campervan.

The ID. Buzz also fits perfectly with our vision of sustainability. It's built just across the border in Hanover, and Volkswagen manufactures and delivers it with a carbon-neutral balance. We then transform it into an Outbase campervan at our workshop in Utrecht.

Buzz offers everything we were looking for: the right size, outstanding electric technology, a spacious interior, exceptional driving comfort and a design with a remarkable campervan heritage. With the latest 79 kWh battery, the Outbase Delta offers a real-world range of over 400 kilometres on a full charge under normal conditions. With a relaxed driving style, ranges of up to 500 kilometres are even possible.

When developing the Delta, we paid close attention to preserving the efficiency of the Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Despite its fully equipped camper interior, the conversion has been designed to be as lightweight as possible, and our aerodynamic pop-up roof has been optimised using professional wind tunnel software. As a result, the impact on driving range remains limited.

On longer journeys, you naturally won't drive from 100% to 0% battery. In practice, you'll typically cover around 250 to 300 kilometres between charging stops. After that, around 25 minutes of charging is enough to continue your journey.

And that's actually a great fit for travelling by campervan. After 250 to 300 kilometres, it's usually time to stretch your legs, grab a coffee or enjoy lunch. By the time you're ready to set off again, your Delta usually is too.

That's why we build the Outbase Flow exclusively on the fully electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz. We believe in a travel car that's designed from the ground up for electric driving, without compromises or halfway solutions.

No. The Outbase Delta is exclusively available as a fully electric campervan. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz was designed from the ground up as a fully electric vehicle, so it isn't available with a hybrid or any other type of drivetrain.

To be honest, we wouldn't choose a hybrid anyway. Years ago, we made a conscious decision to build only fully electric campervans. To us, electric driving isn't the future, it's already here.

In our view, a hybrid is a compromise. It combines two drivetrains, which also means two systems. In practice, that means more charging because of the smaller battery, refuelling with petrol as well, more technology, more maintenance, a greater chance of faults, and still producing emissions. On longer journeys, much of the electric advantage disappears, while your overall travel time hardly changes.

The ID. Buzz, on the other hand, was designed entirely around electric driving. It's quiet, smooth, comfortable and powered by a much simpler drivetrain. Over the past few years, our customers have also shown that you can travel almost anywhere in a fully electric campervan.

That's why we don't see fully electric travel as a compromise. We see it as a more refined way to travel.
